I read "The Outsiders" and watched the movie based off of it when I was in middle school, and it quickly moved itself toward the top of my list of favorite books. I sympathized with Ponyboy for feeling like an outsider amongst the outsiders, and I fell in love with Johnny, and it just felt like a real, yet emotionally satisfying, story. I still cry every time I go over it.
Earlier this year I read "That Was Then, This Is Now", a semi-sequel to it. It features some of the same characters, this time as minor characters, and it tells a story of something that happened in the same "world" about a year after the first story took place. However, unlike "The Outsiders", which leaves the reader with a good sentiment and some semblance of hope, this book brings the reader down, down, and down some more before bringing the reader down even further. Then it just ends.
Hmm. I'm rethinking my decision to read "Tex" someday.

My friend told me about that book, but I never got around to reading it... I wish I had...
